  Criteria and Categories of Membership  
 

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Membership in SPS does not in itself imply that one is qualified to practice psychology in Singapore

  • SPS will require academic transcripts and certificates to be mailed directly from the home institution from 28 August 2009.
  • Reinstatement of lapsed membership attracts a reinstament fee and backpayment of past dues. If your membership has lapsed and have not received a reminder from SPS, please email us at membership@singaporepsychologicalsociety.org

SPS Constitution was amended in November 2004

Criteria and categories of membership are as follows:

For eligibility to apply, the intending members shall meet the following requirements:

a. STUDENT MEMBER
For the Student Member (S$20.00 per year), the minimum requirement shall be full time or part time study with one or more Psychology courses in a tertiary institution.

The following group discount for student membership applications apply to Psychology students studying at Singapore universities:

1. For 50 applicants, 25% of the processing fee will be waived; 2. For 100 applicants, 50% of the processing fee will be waived; 3. For 150 or more applicants, 75% of the processing fee will be waived.

For bulk processing of application forms (with relevant documents and fees), they have to be submitted via your institution's student representative and forwarded to the Secretariat's office. Please contact membership@singaporepsychologicalsociety.org for further enquiries.

b. AFFILIATE MEMBER
For the Affiliate Member (S$30.00 per year), the minimum requirement shall be a degree in any discipline, recognised by the Society

c. ASSOCIATE MEMBER
For the Associate Member/Overseas Associate (S$40.00 per year), the minimum qualifications are one of the following:

(1) Degree with 50% of curriculum in Psychology.
(2) General degree in Psychology.
(3) Honours degree in Psychology.
(4) Master s degree in Psychology.

d. FULL MEMBER
For the Full Member (S$50.00 per year), the minimum qualifications are one of the following:

(1) A Bachelor degree in psychology or equivalent, or a Master's degree in psychology or equivalent, recognised by the Society, with 2 years relevant work experience.

(2) A Bachelor degree in psychology or equivalent, recognised by the Society, together with a further qualification in psychology which may be a Master's or a Doctoral degree or equivalent.

(3) A Master s or a Doctoral degree or a post graduate professional qualification in a specialized field in psychology from a recognised academic institution, such qualification having entailed supervised practical training of not less than 400 hours in a variety of settings.

(4) A licensed, chartered or registered psychologist legally entitled to practise as a professional psychologist in one of the following countries or states: an Australian state, Canada, New Zealand, United States of America, United Kingdom or Great Britain and Northern Ireland, or such other countries as the Council may from time to time determine.

(5) Full membership with an overseas national psychological society recognised by the Society

OVERSEAS STUDENT/ASSOCIATE/FULL MEMBER
Overseas Student Member/Associate/Full Members shall fulfill the requirements as at (a), (b), or (c) above, and they reside overseas.

Only members appropriately qualified under clauses VII 2(c), (3)or (4) shall be entitled to use the following designations; Clinical Psychologist; Counselling Psychologist; Educational Psychologist; Industrialor Occupational Psychologist or any combination of these latter terms.

HONORARY FELLOW
A Fellow must be well-established and has made substantial original contribution to the advancement of psychological knowledge or practice. Fellows of the SPS shall either be proposed by Fellows of overseas psychological societies or by the Council. Honorary Fellows shall be unanimously invited by the Council after seeking the counsel of eminent psychologists within and beyond Singapore.

UPGRADING OF MEMBERSHIP

A member who is interested to upgrade his/her membership would still be required to pay dues as stated in the due reminder however the person would be given a grace period of 3 months to submit the relevant documents for upgrading by where he/she only has to top up the difference in membership fees. Membership processing fee applies.
