Mark Williams is Professor of Clinical Psychology and Wellcome Principal Research Fellow in the University of Oxford.   He has been interested in cognitive models and treatment of depression and suicidal behaviour for many years, and collaborated with John Teasdale and Zindel Segal in developing Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy to prevent relapse and recurrence in major depression.   His current work, with Melanie Fennell, is examining the application of MBCT to suicidal patients.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression(Workshop)
There is a high risk of relapse and recurrence in patients suffering a first episode of major depression. Once an episode has recurred, the risk of a further episode is substantially increased. There is accumulating evidence to suggest that this risk of recurrence is highest for those people who react to small shifts in negative mood with re-triggering of old habits of negative thinking formed during previous episodes. This workshop teaches skills at disengaging from habitual dysfunctional cognitive routines, especially depression-related ruminative thought patterns in a way to reduce risk of relapse and recurrence of depression.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) combines Jon Kabat-Zinn's Stress Reduction program with techniques from Cognitive Therapy in an eight week 'class' format for around twelve patients who are currently in remission. It aims to teach participants how to become aware of early warning signs of relapse, and to reduce tendencies to avoid these early signs. It includes breath meditation and mindful movement to help participants become more aware of moment-to-moment changes in the mind and the body. It also includes basic education about depression, and exercises from cognitive therapy that emphasise the links between thinking and feeling. Evidence suggests that MBCT is effective in reducing risk of relapse in patients with three or more previous episodes of major depression, is equivalent to long-term antidepressant use for those who stop taking medication under supervision, and can help those with treatment-resistant depression. MBCT is now included in the UK Government's National Institute of Clinical Excellence ( NICE ) Guidelines for prevention of recurrence in major depression. During the workshop participants will have the chance to experience some of the practices used in the 8-week program and to discuss how these are integrated with CBT through dialogue and discussion of the practice.

Learning Outcomes
The aim is to provide comprehensive training in the instruction of MBCT group therapy in order to prepare clinicians to provide this therapy in the community.

Brain-Based Therapy: Innovations in Clinical Practice by John Arden, PhD

Recent advances in the neurosciences have increased our knowledge of how and why people change. This workshop will examine which aspects of prevailing theoretical orientations are therapeutic and which ones are counter-therapeutic. Brain-based Therapy synthesizes neuroscience, evidence-based treatment, and attachment theory into a hybrid therapeutic model. Using this model, treatment strategies for depression and anxiety disorders will be examined, as well as PTSD, OCD, ADD. Participants will develop a new way of conceptualizing the therapeutic process and move beyond the traditional theoretical school approach.

Participants will:

. Understand the dynamics and limitations of outcomes research And evidence-based practice
. Understand how brain-based therapy affects different parts of the brain to ameliorate depression and anxiety disorders.
. Understand which aspects of traditional therapies are relevant to efficacious therapy and which ones are counter-therapeutic.
. Apply this model to use effective with teens and children with OCD, ADHD etc.

John Arden, PhD is the author of 12 books including: Rewire Your Brain. Dr. Arden is lead author of the books: Brain-Based Therapy:Adult and Brain-Based Therapy:Child

His book: America's Meltdown: Creating the Lowest Common Denominator Society explored the degradation of the fabric of American society.

PARENT EFFECTIVENESS TRAINING (P.E.T.)

A UNIQUE INTERNATIONAL PARENTING PROGRAM (Conducted in over 70 countries) written by Dr. Thomas Gordon - Twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize

This program provides parents with the "HOW-TO-SKILLS" and theory to build and enhance parent child/teenager relationships by achieving a balance between over-controlling or no-control parenting methods. This highly effective program is conducted over eight (8) sessions each consisting of 3 hours duration. For participants to maximize the benefits from this program it is important they attend all sessions as each session builds on the previous session. The program is structured to provide participants with the skills to adopt in addressing a variety of behaviour/relationship issues that families deal with everyday. An important success element of the program requires participants to apply the skills learned within their family environment between sessions. Each session includes group sharing to provide an opportunity for participants to share their experiences to receive instructor feedback and learn from the sharing of other participants.

What do we do in the 8 Sessions?
Session 1: Takes a practical look at the dynamics of child/teenage issues and why these may occur.
Session 2: Learn skills to respond effectively to child/teenage behaviour in a manner that recognizes the importance of preserving the emotional well being of both parent and child/teenager.
Session 3: Develop listening skills to gain a deeper appreciation as to what upsets and distresses your child/teenager.
Session 4: Learn assertive skills to understand the needs of your child/teenager so that they will listen to you.
Session 5: Integrating skills learned to successfully handle negative responses from your child/teenager to your requests. This is a critical session.
Session 6: Learn Conflict Resolution skills to achieve win-win outcome in resolving conflicts between parent-child/teenage as well as adult-to-adult relationships.
Session 7: Develop further the win-win theory skills within a family meeting environment to resolve sibling rivalry and parent-child/teenager agendas.
Session 8: Combines all P.E.T. skills learned from previous sessions to address family issues arising from differences in personal values within the family.

BONUS!! The skills developed and learned during these 8 sessions are readily transferable to the work-place, business relationships and adult relationships.

Participants will expand and integrate their knowledge and skills in applying The Standard Protocol. Individualized learning will take place through live demonstrations and advanced facilitated practicum.
