Psychologist
Dyslexia Association of Singapore
Posted on website on January 12, 2008

Join a rapidly expanding organization that provides a continuum of services for dyslexic children, their parents, mainstream teachers and other professionals in the field of dyslexia, not only in Singapore but in the region !

Train to become a specialist professional – to assess and diagnose dyslexic children who can achieve their true potential in life if identified and given the right guidance and support!

Pre-requisites
The successful candidates will have a good honours degree in psychology. Fresh graduates are welcome to apply. Candidates must love working with children of all ages, be keen to learn and have great drive and initiative! Candidates must be able to start work on 11 February 2008 and be able to work flexible hours, including Saturdays.

Dyslexia in Singapore

It is estimated that there may be 20,000 dyslexic children in Singapore Primary and Secondary Schools with dyslexia severe enough to warrant specialist intervention. There are probably another 3,000 to 4,000 preschool children with literacy difficulties and who are “at-risk” of dyslexia. The enrollment for the DAS Special Learning Programme is just over 1,000 pre-school, primary and secondary school students as we reached the end of Term IV 2007. We are therefore merely touching the tip of the iceberg. There are still thousands of dyslexic students who need to be identified and helped. The DAS Assessment Service is thus at the forefront of this most important mission!

The DAS Assessment Service

The DAS assessment service conducts full psychological assessments to diagnose students who have dyslexia and other related learning difficulties. The assessments include detailed discussions with parents on the child's learning background and a full cognitive and literacy assessment. The psychologists subsequently refer these students to DAS Learning Centres for remedial classes or to other professionals for more specific assistance. Each year, almost 600 pre-school, primary and secondary students are assessed by the DAS team of psychologists.

The Training Provided

The assessment and diagnosis of dyslexics is a highly specialized area and psychologists joining us undergo intensive in-house training and supervision by our Head of Assessment. For example, just the first four weeks will include :

Week 1 : Introduction to DAS and Dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties

Week 2 : Theories of dyslexia, assessment observation, BAS-II

Week 3 : Assessment observation, practice with tests, literacy assessments, scoring and interpreting cognitive profiles

Week 4 : Practice tests, assessment issues (e.g., building rapport, parent interviews), report writing

Further training and supervision will continue in the subsequent months. Training to help psychologists understand the dyslexia teacher's role is also provided.

After their initial contracts, most of our psychologists go on to attend Masters Degree programmes in psychology. If the field of study will contribute to the work of the DAS, the DAS will consider study loans/scholarships for worthy employees.

Other Areas of Involvement

Research
Most research in dyslexia has been conducted in the UK and the US, both of which have largely monolingual environments. Very limited research has been done on dyslexia in a multilingual society such as Singapore. Therefore, our psychologists are expected to play an important role in conducting research at the DAS.

Awareness and Training Activities
DAS psychologists are also actively involved in the conduct of awareness talks and training courses. These activities are conducted at DAS centres, national libraries, community centres, MOE schools as well as overseas.

Fund Raising and other Corporate Activities
As a non-profit organization, all DAS staff are expected to take part in fund-raising activities as and when required.

Three Year Contract
- In view of the investment in our psychologists, new DAS psychologists are required to sign a 3-year contract. The above training will be conducted during the contract period.

Salary and Benefits

Successful candidates will receive a competitive starting salary of $2,500 per month.
After probation, they will also receive mid-year and year-end bonuses, medical, hospitalization, dental and other benefits.

Work Venue

The Assessment Team is based in our dyslexia centre at Bukit Merah Central. However, successful candidates must expect to work from any of our five centres. Three more learning centres will be opened in the next two years.

Working Hours

All DAS staff work 44 hours a week. However, in view of the demand for DAS services in the evenings and on weekends, psychologists must expect to be flexible in their working hours.

How to apply

All interested applicants are to download and complete a personal particulars form available at www.das.org.sg and e-mail to join_us@das.org.sg by 15 January 2008.
